Authorities are intensifying their search for an “armed and dangerous” suspect after a shooting along Interstate 75 in Laurel County, Kentucky, left five people seriously injured on Saturday night. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Joseph A. Couch, allegedly opened fire on multiple vehicles, creating panic along the highway.
The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office reported that the shooting took place about 8 miles north of London, Kentucky, where nine vehicles were hit by gunfire. Five people sustained serious injuries, though there have been no fatalities reported. The interstate was temporarily closed for the investigation but has since reopened.
Couch, who remains at large, is the focus of an active manhunt in nearby wooded areas, with local and federal authorities, including the FBI and ATF, assisting in the search. The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office has warned the public not to approach Couch, emphasizing that he is considered “armed and dangerous.” Authorities have requested that anyone who sees him report his location immediately.
Local hospitals, including Saint Joseph London and the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital, confirmed they are treating multiple patients from the incident, with most injuries described as minor.
London Mayor Randall Weddle expressed relief that no one was killed but urged the community to remain vigilant as the search continues. “We ask that you continue to pray for those affected,” he said in a social media statement.
Governor Andy Beshear has acknowledged the severity of the situation, assuring residents that the state is offering full support to local law enforcement. A more extensive search is expected to resume at daybreak on Sunday, with the investigation ongoing.
Authorities are asking residents to avoid the area and use alternative routes, especially on U.S. Route 25, as the search for Couch continues.
