A California couple eluded an armed carjacker in Hawaii by trekking up a volcano in a bold bid for safety. The incident, involving a 29-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man, unfolded along the Piilani Highway in Maui on June 4. So far, the couple has evaded capture through their quick thinking and resilience, culminating in their rescue and the arrest of the alleged gunman, 41-year-old Christopher Helmer.

The couple was traveling down the street in a rented Ford Mustang when they noticed a Toyota Tacoma following them with its lights off. Unnerved, they let the Tacoma pass by beside them. Next thing, the Toyota Tacoma stopped in the middle of the road; its driver got out, pointed a gun at them, and ordered them out of their car.

“The responsible male drove off with the stolen Mustang, and the couple began to walk but hid behind bushes and boulders on the side of the roadway. The male stopped the Mustang and started driving back toward them,” the Maui Police Department reported. He taunted the couple, calling out to them and firing at least one shot, which had the added effect of making them 

believe he was shooting at them—it intensified the level of fear.

Terrified and seeking refuge, the pair decided to climb up the pinnacle of the Haleakala volcano. It was a tiring journey of uncertainty, and they somehow evaded the clutches of the carjacker as they were safely out of his sight. It had been almost 24 seconds since the ordeal. While hiking, they met another group of hikers and park rangers who assisted them to the visitor’s center before hitting the summit.

“A group of hikers and park rangers helped the couple to the visitor’s center,” said the Maui Police Department. The timely help from the hikers and park rangers was crucial for their safety and for getting them the needed assistance.

On the fourth day after the hair-raising incident, the Maui Police arrested 35-year-old Christopher Helmer sans incident. During the time of arrest, Helmer was found driving the stolen Mustang, and he had a loaded firearm with him. “Following his arrest, further investigation resulted in the recovery of additional evidence linking him to the robbery and the recovery of the Tacoma, which was found to be a stolen vehicle,” police confirmed.

Reports indicate that Helmer is being held on half-a-million-dollar bail for robbery and carrying or possessing a loaded firearm on a public highway.
